Top Signs Furnace Needs Service Before Winter

The best time to find out your furnace has a problem is before you need it — not on the first cold night of the year. Here are the signs that your furnace needs attention before winter arrives.

Unusual noises. A furnace in good condition runs relatively quietly. Banging or popping when the system starts up can indicate delayed ignition. Rattling may mean a loose panel or component. Squealing often points to a worn belt or bearing. Any new or unusual noise is worth having checked.

Yellow or flickering pilot light. The pilot light on a gas furnace should burn blue. A yellow or orange flame can indicate the presence of carbon monoxide — a serious safety concern. If you see a yellow flame, call for service.

Increased heating bills. If your heating costs have risen significantly without a change in usage or weather, the furnace may be losing efficiency. This is common in older systems and often precedes a breakdown.

Uneven heating. If some rooms are consistently colder than others, the furnace may not be distributing heat properly. This can be a duct problem or a furnace problem — either way, it's worth investigating.

Frequent cycling. A furnace that turns on and off every few minutes is short-cycling. This wastes energy, puts extra wear on the system, and usually indicates a problem with the thermostat, heat exchanger, or airflow.

The system is over 15 years old. Age alone isn't a reason to replace a furnace, but it is a reason to have it inspected carefully. Older systems are more likely to have heat exchanger cracks, which can allow carbon monoxide to enter the living space.

West Coast Air Conditioning provides furnace inspections and tune-ups throughout Calaveras and San Joaquin County. Schedule before heating season for the best availability. Call (209) 598-8889.
