How Often Should Ductwork Be Replaced?

Ductwork doesn't get much attention until something goes wrong. But aging, leaky ducts can waste a significant amount of the energy your HVAC system produces — and they can cause comfort problems that no amount of equipment upgrades will fix.

How long ductwork lasts. Well-installed sheet metal ductwork can last 25 years or more. Flexible duct (flex duct) typically lasts 15 to 25 years, but it's more susceptible to damage, kinking, and deterioration. Older homes with original ductwork may have ducts that are well past their useful life.

Signs that ductwork needs attention. Uneven heating or cooling throughout the home. Rooms that are consistently too hot or too cold. Visible damage, disconnected sections, or collapsed flex duct. Excessive dust in the home. Higher-than-expected energy bills. Musty or stale odors from the vents.

Repair versus replacement. Not all duct problems require full replacement. Leaks at joints and connections can often be sealed with mastic or metal tape. Damaged sections can be replaced individually. Full replacement makes sense when the ductwork is very old, extensively damaged, or when a major HVAC replacement is being done anyway.

The energy case for replacement. Studies have found that leaky ductwork can waste 20 to 30% of the air a system produces. In a home with significant duct leakage, replacing the ducts can reduce energy bills by a meaningful amount — sometimes enough to pay for the project over several years.
