How to Lower Cooling Bills Without Sacrificing Comfort

Cooling a home in the Central Valley foothills is expensive. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F, and air conditioners run for months. But there are practical steps that reduce your bills without making your home uncomfortable.

Set the thermostat strategically. The Department of Energy recommends 78°F when you're home and higher when you're away. Every degree you raise the thermostat reduces cooling costs by roughly 3%. A programmable or smart thermostat makes this automatic.

Change the air filter regularly. A clogged filter forces the AC to work harder, which uses more energy and strains the equipment. Check the filter monthly during peak cooling season and replace it when it's visibly dirty — typically every 1 to 3 months.

Seal air leaks. Gaps around windows, doors, and electrical outlets let cool air escape and hot air in. Weatherstripping and caulk are inexpensive fixes that make a real difference in a home's cooling load.

Use ceiling fans. Fans don't cool the air, but they make it feel cooler by creating a wind-chill effect. Running a ceiling fan allows you to raise the thermostat by about 4°F without noticing a difference in comfort. Turn fans off when you leave the room.

Block direct sunlight. South- and west-facing windows let in significant heat during afternoon hours. Closing blinds or curtains on those windows during the hottest part of the day can reduce the cooling load noticeably.

Schedule annual maintenance. A well-maintained AC runs more efficiently. A technician will clean the coils, check refrigerant levels, inspect electrical connections, and identify small problems before they become expensive ones. Most homeowners see a measurable improvement in efficiency after a tune-up.

Check your ductwork. Leaky ducts can waste 20 to 30% of the air your AC produces before it reaches the living space. If some rooms are always warmer than others, duct leaks may be the cause.

West Coast Air Conditioning offers maintenance tune-ups and duct inspections for homes in Valley Springs, Calaveras County, and San Joaquin County. Call (209) 598-8889 to schedule.
