Honest HVAC Estimate Questions to Ask First

Getting an HVAC estimate is easy. Getting an honest one takes a little more effort. The right questions help you understand what you're actually being quoted, compare bids fairly, and spot contractors who are cutting corners or padding prices.

Here are the questions worth asking before you accept any estimate.

What exactly is included in this price? An estimate should spell out equipment, labor, permits, refrigerant, disposal of the old unit, and any materials. If the quote is a single number with no breakdown, ask for an itemized version. Vague quotes lead to surprise charges.

Is this the price I'll pay, or could it change? Some contractors quote a low number and add charges once the job is underway. Ask whether the estimate is a firm quote or an approximation, and under what circumstances the price could increase.

Does this include permits? In California, most HVAC installations require a permit. Permits cost money and take time, which is why some contractors skip them. But unpermitted work can cause problems when you sell your home and may void your equipment warranty. Make sure permits are included.

What equipment are you recommending, and what are the alternatives? A good contractor explains why they're recommending a specific system and offers at least one alternative at a different price point. If you're only shown one option, ask what else is available.

What efficiency rating does this system have? Higher SEER ratings cost more upfront but lower your monthly bills. Ask the contractor to estimate the annual operating cost difference between options. In a hot climate like the Central Valley, efficiency matters.

What warranty comes with the equipment and the installation? Equipment warranties typically cover parts for 5 to 10 years. Labor warranties vary by contractor. Ask what's covered, for how long, and what voids the warranty.

How did you size this system? The right size requires a Manual J load calculation. If the contractor sized the system based on square footage alone, that's a red flag. An improperly sized system costs more to run and wears out faster.
