Repair Versus Replace an Air Conditioner?

When your air conditioner breaks down in the middle of a Valley Springs summer, the question of repair versus replacement is urgent. Here's a clear framework for making the right call.

Consider the age of the system. Central AC systems typically last 15 to 20 years. If your system is under 10 years old, repair is almost always the right choice for anything short of a compressor failure. If it's over 15 years old, replacement deserves serious consideration even for moderate repairs.

Apply the 5,000 rule. Multiply the age of the system (in years) by the cost of the repair. If the result is more than $5,000, replacement is generally the better investment. For example, a $400 repair on a 10-year-old system gives you 4,000 — repair makes sense. A $600 repair on a 12-year-old system gives you 7,200 — replacement may be worth considering.

Factor in efficiency. Older systems have lower SEER ratings than modern equipment. A new system may cost less to operate by a meaningful amount each month. Ask your technician to estimate the annual operating cost difference.

Consider the repair history. A system that has needed multiple repairs in recent years is likely to continue needing them. Each repair extends the life of the equipment a little, but the pattern usually continues.

Watch for compressor issues. The compressor is the most expensive component in an AC system. If the compressor has failed on a system that's more than 10 years old, replacement is usually the better choice — the cost of a compressor replacement approaches the cost of a new system.

Get an honest assessment. A trustworthy technician will give you the repair cost, the expected remaining life of the equipment, and the cost of replacement — and let you decide. If a contractor pushes hard for replacement without explaining the reasoning, get a second opinion.

West Coast Air Conditioning provides honest repair-or-replace assessments with no pressure. Call (209) 598-8889.
