Home Air Purifier HVAC System Guide

Indoor air quality is a growing concern for many homeowners — and for good reason. The EPA estimates that indoor air can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Whole-home air purification systems that integrate with your HVAC can address this more effectively than portable room units.

How whole-home air purifiers work. Unlike portable units that clean the air in a single room, whole-home systems are installed in the ductwork and treat all the air that passes through the HVAC system. They can remove dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, bacteria, and some viruses.

Types of whole-home air purifiers. Media filters (high-MERV filters installed in the duct system) are the simplest and most affordable option. Electronic air cleaners use an electrical charge to capture particles. UV germicidal lights kill bacteria and mold in the air stream. Combination systems use multiple technologies.

Who benefits most. Households with allergy or asthma sufferers. Homes with pets. Homes in areas with high outdoor air pollution or wildfire smoke. Homes with musty odors or visible mold issues. Anyone who wants to reduce the spread of airborne illness.

What to watch out for. Some air purifiers generate ozone as a byproduct, which can irritate the lungs. Look for systems that are certified ozone-free. Also be aware that high-MERV filters can restrict airflow if the system isn't designed for them — ask your contractor whether your equipment can handle the filter you're considering.

West Coast Air Conditioning installs whole-home air quality systems throughout Calaveras and San Joaquin County. Call (209) 598-8889 to discuss options for your home.
