Ductwork Repair Options for a More Comfortable Home

Your ductwork is the delivery system for your HVAC equipment. If it's leaking, disconnected, or poorly insulated, your system works harder, your bills go up, and some rooms never reach the right temperature. Ductwork problems are more common than most homeowners realize — and more fixable.

Common ductwork problems. The most frequent issues are leaks at joints and connections, disconnected sections (especially in attics and crawl spaces), damaged or missing insulation, and ducts that are undersized for the home's layout. In older homes, flex duct that has kinked or collapsed is also common.

Duct sealing. For leaks at joints and connections, duct mastic — a paste-like sealant — is the most durable repair option. Metal tape (not standard duct tape, which fails over time) is also used. A technician can test duct leakage before and after sealing to confirm the improvement.

Duct insulation. Ducts running through unconditioned spaces like attics and crawl spaces lose significant energy if they're not properly insulated. Adding or replacing insulation around ducts in these areas can meaningfully reduce energy loss.

Section replacement. When a section of ductwork is severely damaged, kinked, or collapsed, replacement is more practical than repair. A technician can replace individual sections without replacing the entire system.

Full duct replacement. In homes with very old ductwork — particularly those with original flex duct from the 1970s or 1980s — full replacement may be the most cost-effective long-term solution. This is especially true when replacing the HVAC equipment, since the new system's performance depends on the duct system delivering air properly.

Aeroseal duct sealing. For homes with extensive leakage that's difficult to access, Aeroseal is a process that seals ducts from the inside by injecting a sealant mist that adheres to leak points. It's more expensive than manual sealing but can address leaks in hard-to-reach locations.

West Coast Air Conditioning inspects, seals, and repairs ductwork throughout Calaveras and San Joaquin County. Call (209) 598-8889 to schedule an assessment.
