How to Fix Uneven Heating in Your California Home

If some rooms in your home are warm and others stay cold no matter how high you set the thermostat, you're dealing with uneven heating. It's one of the most common complaints homeowners have about their HVAC systems — and it usually has a fixable cause.

Start with the basics. Before calling a technician, check a few things yourself. Make sure all supply vents are open and unobstructed. Furniture, rugs, and curtains placed over or in front of vents block airflow significantly. Also check the return air vents — they need to be clear too.

Check the air filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow through the entire system. When airflow is reduced, the rooms farthest from the furnace often suffer most. Replace the filter if it's been more than a month or two since the last change.

Look at the ductwork. Leaky or disconnected ducts are one of the most common causes of uneven heating. If a duct serving a particular room has come loose or developed a significant leak, that room will be consistently cold. A technician can inspect and seal ducts to restore proper airflow.

Consider the thermostat location. If the thermostat is in a room that heats up quickly — near a sunny window or a heat-generating appliance — it may shut off the furnace before the rest of the house reaches the set temperature. Relocating the thermostat or adding a zoning system can help.

Think about the home's layout. Two-story homes often have uneven heating by nature — heat rises, so upper floors tend to be warmer. Rooms at the end of long duct runs may receive less airflow. A zoning system with multiple thermostats can address this.

Have the furnace inspected. If the furnace is undersized for the home, or if it's losing efficiency due to age or wear, it may not be able to heat the entire space adequately. A technician can measure airflow, check heat output, and identify whether the equipment is the problem.
