How to Compare HVAC Quotes Without Overpaying

Getting multiple HVAC quotes is smart. But comparing them fairly requires looking beyond the bottom line. Two quotes for the same job can differ by thousands of dollars — and sometimes the cheaper one is actually the better value, while other times it's missing critical work.

Here's how to compare HVAC quotes accurately.

Compare scope, not just price. Make sure each quote covers the same work. Does it include permits? Disposal of the old equipment? Ductwork inspection or repair? Refrigerant? A quote that excludes these items will look cheaper but may end up costing more.

Compare the equipment. Check the brand, model, and efficiency rating (SEER2 for AC, AFUE for furnaces) in each quote. A lower price may reflect lower-efficiency equipment that costs more to operate. Ask each contractor to estimate annual operating costs.

Check the warranties. Equipment warranties vary by manufacturer and model. Labor warranties vary by contractor. A quote with a longer labor warranty may be worth a higher price. Ask what each warranty covers and what voids it.

Verify the contractor's credentials. Each contractor should be able to provide a CSLB license number, proof of insurance, and references. A lower price from an unlicensed contractor is not a bargain — it's a liability.

Ask about financing. If the quotes are close in price, ask whether any contractor offers financing. A 0% financing option can make a higher-quality system more accessible.

Trust your gut about communication. The contractor who answers your questions clearly, explains the work in plain language, and doesn't pressure you is usually the one who will do the job right. Price matters, but so does trust.
