Best Thermostat Settings for Summer

Your thermostat settings have a bigger impact on your energy bills than almost any other factor you control. Here's how to set your thermostat for summer comfort and efficiency.

The recommended setting when you're home. The Department of Energy recommends 78°F when you're home and want cooling. This is warmer than many people are used to, but ceiling fans can make it feel several degrees cooler. Every degree you raise the thermostat reduces cooling costs by roughly 3%.

When you're away. Set the thermostat to 85°F or higher when you're away for more than a few hours. A programmable or smart thermostat can do this automatically based on your schedule. Avoid turning the AC off completely — a very hot home takes longer to cool down and puts extra strain on the system.

At night. Many people sleep better in a cooler room. Setting the thermostat to 72 to 74°F at night is reasonable. A programmable thermostat can raise the temperature automatically in the early morning before you wake up.

Use ceiling fans. Ceiling fans create a wind-chill effect that makes a room feel 4°F cooler. This allows you to raise the thermostat without sacrificing comfort. Remember to turn fans off when you leave the room — they cool people, not spaces.

Consider a smart thermostat. A smart thermostat learns your schedule and preferences, adjusts automatically, and can be controlled remotely. Most homeowners see a meaningful reduction in energy bills after installing one.
