Maintenance

Is HVAC Maintenance Worth It? Yes - Usually

Annual HVAC maintenance is widely recommended, but is it actually worth the cost? The honest answer is: usually yes, but it depends on your equipment and situation.

What maintenance actually does. A professional tune-up cleans components that accumulate dirt over time (coils, burners, drain lines), checks refrigerant levels, tests safety controls, identifies worn parts before they fail, and verifies that the system is operating at its rated efficiency. These tasks genuinely extend equipment life and prevent breakdowns.

The efficiency argument. A dirty evaporator coil can reduce AC efficiency by 5 to 10%. A clogged condensate drain can cause water damage. A cracked heat exchanger is a safety hazard. Regular maintenance catches these issues early.

The warranty argument. Many equipment manufacturers require annual professional maintenance to keep the warranty valid. If you skip maintenance and the equipment fails, you may find the warranty claim denied.

When maintenance is less valuable. On very new equipment (under 3 years old) that's running well, the benefit of maintenance is primarily preventive rather than corrective. On very old equipment that's likely to be replaced soon, the cost of maintenance may not be worth it.

What to expect from a good maintenance visit. A thorough inspection and cleaning, a written report of findings, honest recommendations for any repairs needed, and no pressure to buy services you don't need.
