Furnace Service That Keeps Your Home Ready

Valley Springs winters are mild compared to much of the country, but nighttime temperatures regularly drop into the 30s, and a furnace that fails in January is a real problem. Regular furnace service keeps your system ready when you need it and helps you avoid the most common breakdowns.

What a furnace service visit covers. A thorough furnace tune-up includes inspecting and cleaning the burners, checking the heat exchanger for cracks, testing ignition and safety controls, measuring airflow, lubricating moving parts, checking the flue for proper venting, and replacing the air filter. The technician will also test carbon monoxide levels and check for gas leaks.

When to schedule service. The best time to have your furnace serviced is in the fall, before heating season begins. This gives you time to address any issues before you need the system. If you haven't had service in more than a year, schedule it regardless of the season.

Signs your furnace needs attention now. Don't wait for the annual visit if you notice any of these: the furnace is making unusual noises (banging, rattling, or squealing), the pilot light is yellow instead of blue, the system is cycling on and off frequently, some rooms are much colder than others, or your heating bills have increased significantly without a change in usage.

The carbon monoxide concern. A cracked heat exchanger can allow carbon monoxide — an odorless, colorless gas — to enter your living space. This is a serious safety issue. If your CO detector goes off, leave the house and call for service. Annual furnace inspections catch heat exchanger cracks before they become dangerous.
