Mini Split Installation for Garage: What to Know

A mini split is one of the most practical ways to heat and cool a garage. Unlike a window unit, it doesn't require a window opening. Unlike extending the central HVAC system, it doesn't require ductwork. And it provides both heating and cooling from a single system.

Sizing the system. The right size depends on the garage's square footage, ceiling height, insulation level, and how much sun exposure the space gets. A common rule of thumb is 6,000 to 12,000 BTUs for a single-car garage and 12,000 to 18,000 BTUs for a two-car garage, but a proper load calculation is more accurate.

Placement of the indoor unit. The indoor unit should be mounted high on a wall, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. It should be positioned to distribute air evenly throughout the space. Avoid mounting it directly above a workbench or area where dust and debris are generated.

Electrical requirements. Most mini splits require a dedicated 240V circuit. If your garage panel doesn't have the capacity, you may need an electrical upgrade. This is a cost that's easy to overlook when budgeting for the project.

Insulation matters. A mini split will work in an uninsulated garage, but it will work much better — and cost much less to operate — in a well-insulated one. If you're planning to use the garage as a workshop or living space, insulating the walls and ceiling before installing the mini split is worth the investment.

Permits and installation. Mini split installation requires a permit in most California jurisdictions. The refrigerant lines must be installed by a licensed technician with EPA certification. DIY mini split kits exist, but improper installation can void the warranty and create safety issues.

West Coast Air Conditioning installs mini splits in garages, workshops, and additions throughout Calaveras and San Joaquin County. Call (209) 598-8889 for a free estimate.
