How to Spot Refrigerant Leaks at Home

Refrigerant is the substance that makes air conditioning possible — it absorbs heat from the air inside your home and releases it outside. When refrigerant leaks, your AC loses its ability to cool effectively, and the leak itself can cause damage to the compressor.

Signs of a refrigerant leak. The most common sign is an AC that runs continuously but doesn't cool the home to the set temperature. Other signs include ice forming on the evaporator coil or refrigerant lines, a hissing or bubbling sound near the indoor unit, and higher-than-normal energy bills.

What you should not do. Refrigerant handling requires EPA certification. Do not attempt to add refrigerant yourself — it's illegal without certification, and adding refrigerant without finding and fixing the leak just delays the problem. Modern refrigerants (R-410A and R-32) are not toxic in small amounts, but they displace oxygen in enclosed spaces and should be treated with respect.

What a technician will do. A certified technician will use electronic leak detection equipment to find the leak, repair it, and then recharge the system to the correct refrigerant level. Simply adding refrigerant without finding the leak is not an acceptable repair — it's a temporary fix that will leave you with the same problem in a few months.

Consider the age of the system. If the system is old and uses R-22 refrigerant (phased out in 2020), a significant leak may tip the repair-versus-replace decision toward replacement. R-22 is expensive and increasingly scarce.

West Coast Air Conditioning is EPA-certified for refrigerant handling and provides leak detection and repair throughout Calaveras and San Joaquin County. Call (209) 598-8889.
