AC Repair Versus Replacement: How to Decide

When your air conditioner breaks down, the repair-versus-replacement decision can feel overwhelming. Here's a clear framework for making the right call.

Age matters most. A central AC system that's under 10 years old and in otherwise good condition is almost always worth repairing, unless the repair is very expensive. A system that's 15 years or older is approaching the end of its useful life, and replacement deserves serious consideration even for moderate repairs.

Use the 50% rule. If the repair cost is more than 50% of the cost of a new system, replacement is generally the better investment. You're spending significant money on equipment that's already near the end of its life.

Consider efficiency gains. Older systems have lower SEER ratings than modern equipment. A new system may cost significantly less to operate each month. In a hot climate like the Central Valley, where the AC runs for months, efficiency differences add up quickly.

Factor in reliability. A system that has needed multiple repairs in recent years is likely to continue needing them. Each repair buys a little more time, but the pattern usually continues.

Think about refrigerant type. Systems that use R-22 refrigerant (phased out in 2020) are increasingly expensive to service. If your system uses R-22 and needs a significant repair, replacement is often the more economical choice.

Get an honest assessment. A trustworthy technician will give you the repair cost, the expected remaining life of the equipment, and the cost of replacement — and let you decide without pressure.
