AC Repair Signs You Shouldn't Ignore at Home

Some AC problems can wait a few days for a scheduled service call. Others need attention right away. Knowing the difference can save you from a more expensive repair — or from a breakdown on the hottest day of the year.

Signs that need attention soon. Warm air from the vents when the system is running. Weak airflow from supply vents. Unusual noises — banging, rattling, squealing, or hissing. Ice forming on the indoor or outdoor unit. A significant increase in energy bills without a change in usage. These are signs that something is wrong and getting worse.

Signs that need attention now. The system won't turn on at all. The outdoor unit is running but the indoor unit isn't (or vice versa). You smell burning or electrical odors from the unit. Your carbon monoxide detector is going off. The system is making a loud banging or grinding noise. These warrant a same-day or emergency service call.

What to check before calling. Verify the thermostat is set correctly. Check the circuit breaker. Replace the air filter if it's clogged. Make sure the outdoor unit is clear of debris. These simple checks resolve a surprising number of service calls.

What a good technician should do. A trustworthy technician will diagnose the problem, explain what's wrong in plain language, give you the repair cost upfront, and tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes more sense. If a technician can't explain the problem clearly or pressures you to make a decision on the spot, get a second opinion.
