Free Homeowner Guide
Repair or replace your HVAC system?
Before you approve a repair or choose a new system, know which questions to ask. This free guide helps you compare the options for your home.

Start with a diagnosis
Age, one repair bill or a rule of thumb cannot tell you which option fits your home. Compare the work needed, the likely result and your budget.
Start with four facts:
Equipment condition
What failed, and why? Ask the technician to explain the diagnosis, show supporting findings and say whether the system is safe to operate while you decide.
Repair history
List recent repairs, their costs and whether the same problem returned. Repeated breakdowns deserve a broader comparison. Record the system's age and maintenance history too.
Comfort
Note rooms that stay too hot or cold. Equipment, airflow, ducts or insulation could be involved. Replacement alone may not resolve the cause.
Energy use
Bring recent utility bills. Ask what explains changes in usage or cost before assuming the equipment is responsible. Any savings estimate should state its assumptions.
When repair may be practical
A specific problem can be corrected, the rest of the system is serviceable and the repair is likely to meet your comfort needs. Ask what it solves, what remains uncertain and what warranty applies.
When to compare replacement
Repairs keep recurring, overall condition is poor or the current system no longer meets your needs. Ask for a written replacement option alongside any viable repair, including the full installation scope and cost.
Your priorities matter
Consider your budget, how long you expect to stay and how much disruption you can manage.

Ask before approving a replacement
Equipment and sizing
Which model numbers and matched components are included? Will you assess the home's heating and cooling needs with a load calculation?
Ducts and airflow
What will you inspect or test, and which duct changes are included?
Permits and verification
Who handles permits, inspections and any required independent testing? Are those costs included?
Startup checks
Will you document airflow, refrigerant charge where applicable and system operation after installation?
Warranty and exclusions
What covers parts and labor, for how long? What registration, maintenance or extra costs should I expect?
Educational guidance only. A qualified technician must inspect your home and system before recommending work. This guide does not include an inspection or repair.
